Now the guests have gone

December 20, 2009

We’ve had the biggest family get together we’ll have this Christmas happen this afternoon. It all went well. It was a pleasure to cook for and there was – unusually – even an opportunity to sit, eat, chat and relax. That’s relatively unheard of when you’re hosting, I find.

But now the lovely guests have gone, the rest of Christmas stretches out ahead of us. All the usual traditions are ahead of us including the Christmas Eve get-together at the in-laws after we’ve sat down to listen to the Nine Lessons and Carols on Radio 4. There’s a lower-key lunch thing next week and then it’s New Year.

In between those times are opportunities to sit and veg, something I don’t often do and something I can’t wait to get underway. There’s a log fire and the inevitable large glass of Merlot to help me along the way. Perfect.

Happy Christmas.
