London: Carnaby Street

August 7, 2010

An unexpected opportunity to wander down from Portland Place to Charing Cross train station took me through Carnaby Street.

Carnaby Street is one of those tourist destinations. You can feel it. There’s a massive sign stretching across the pedestrianised street. This is a ‘London location’.

Wandering down there however, I couldn’t help wondering what all those tourists think about the street when they finally arrive at the stuff of London legend. It’s populated by brand names now. Chain stores.

Sure, the hanging baskets look pretty. But, there’s no spirit. It’s bland. There are too many people taking pictures. And, to be honest, I’m not entirely clear what they’re taking pictures of.

  1. Carnaby Street nowhere near as much of a “place” as it was in the late 60s & early 70s. If I visited London with my parents back then it was a REAL treat to go there. Nowadays, it’s just another street with all the “usual retail suspects” in it … the atmosphere has gone. Very sad.
