2010: Took me to the World

December 23, 2010

Producing this video short for a series on the BBC Proms website didn’t so much ‘Take me to the World’ as take me to a handful of locations around the UK. But it could have been a trip around the world. It was a mammoth operation. Just look at my handy chart when the project was already a few weeks underway.

Mashup Progress

Largely self-shot – except for the BBC Symphony Orchestra & BBC Philharmonic‘s stuff aided and assisted by a colleague – the video features players from the BBC orchestras singing the song ‘Take Me To The World’ accompanied by an instrumental track recorded by Pete Faint.

It was all done on a budget. No licence-fee payers money was wasted .. naturally.

The video was meant to mark both Stephen Sondheim’s 80th birthday and act as a minor sideshow for a very special night at the BBC Proms. Me and my partner went along. It has turned out to be one of the undeniable high points of the year. We still have the show on the Sky+ box.

I stumbled on the video a few days ago and found myself smiling at it. That’s something I hadn’t expected to do. When something is completed and delivered there is a tendency for that ‘thing’ to feel dead and gone. But not this.

And yet there’s a bittersweet experience watching it. Only a month or so ago, I was asked by someone at the BBC whether I enjoyed making it.

“Yes,” I replied with a smile, “but these things are always done with an increasing belief that this will almost certainly be the last one I’ll be allowed to make.”

The questioner looked at me with a confused look on his face. “Oh?”

“Well,” I went on, “my luck’s got to run out at some point, hasn’t it?”
